Mirage

I am so free.
So, so free
that I don’t have anywhere to go.
The world is heavy,
the sky falls upon me
and the gentle sun
is too hot… even here.

I look around me
trying to conceal my burden,
living the present moment.
People have lost their faces,
perhaps they never had them.
I suffocate.
I can’t breathe,
their muted expressions
asphyxiate my hopes.

At times, a slight shift shows itself
alluring, provoking me,
revealing its bewitching halo,
like a trail of fresh breeze.
I run after it,
I want to reach the other side
of this imprisonment.
And it vanishes.
It’s a mirage.

Not even a dystopic summer
can take away what could have been.
